Going back to Thanksgiving Eve...
Since I knew I'd be doing most of the cooking for Thanksgiving dinner, I opted for a pizza night. Amanda was working late so it would just be R, Mom, and me.
Mom always orders two slices of cheese pizza, R and I decided to split a large pizza - half pepperoni, half cheese.
I'll preface the following tale with the fact that I hate pepperoni.
I went to pick up our order. Mom's two slices were in there own package within a bag. I took that to her first. Handed it to her saying, "Mom, here are your two slices."
Ray brought the large pizza box in to Mom's kitchen for the two of us to easily grab our slices and eat dinner with Mom.
Ray and I each ate a couple slices - I noticed that there was one just cheese slice left for me in the box.
Mom finished her first slice and then TOOK MY LAST SLICE from the box.
"Mom! That's my last slice! Your slices were separate."
"No, I've only had one slice."
"I'm not saying you had more than one slice. Where is the other piece from your package? Remember, your two slices were packaged separately!"
"I haven't eaten two slices. This is my second slice."
"Then where is the second slice from your package?"
"I don't know what you're talking about. This is my second slice."
"No, that's my last slice, out of the box that R and I are splitting."
"Well, I've only had one and I wanted two."
NEVER MIND
Forward to Saturday morning.
Mom says, "What's this in my microwave?"
I go to see what she's talking about.
She pulls out a slice of pizza.
"That's the second piece. The one you should have eaten instead of taking mine."
"Oh well, sorry, jeez......"

It's Time...
to reveal a little project undertaken last month. I received my PTG Journal and there was a photograph of a birdhouse made from piano parts. Well, I could do that, I thought. But I don't want a bird house. I don't even want a fake bird house. Maybe I'll just make a storage box...or something.
Then Ray said, "You could put a clock in it."
Why hadn't I thought of that?

Good Karma Shortage
I think the good karma for the week got used up when the girls went to the mall yesterday. Yep, that's right. Daughter found the jeans she wanted...bought two pair and some jean shorts. Mom got some new tops and a pretty jacket. I even found a tee shirt that I liked so much that I bought two...two different colors. All in all it was a very pleasant afternoon.
Then we got home.
My order of piano supplies had arrived and I hauled the box downstairs to the workshop for unpacking. I ordered the wrong sized parts for a job I'm working on. Drat. But no worries, with a bit of added labor I can assemble my own. Also another box of keys arrived. I was expecting it but was hoping for a couple days to catch up on other things...like housework. No such luck?
Oh, mustn't forget to mention the morning phone call. Before we had headed to the mall. This was a phone call from another piano parts supplier. They were checking, thankfully, about an order I had placed with them online. They were making sure that I truly meant 10 sets rather than 10 parts. Nononono! Umm, please don't send sets (= to about $2000.00), please send 10 parts, as in $5.00 per part.
So then we went out for the afternoon (the shopping trip) and had so much fun.
When I got home there was an email from the same supplier letting me know that the key tops, of which I had ordered 5 sets (yes, sets) were on back order until July-ish. OH NO! That won't do. I have clients that sometimes like those budget minded replacements rather than the higher priced, albeit nicer, stuff.
So, last night I sat down with the computer to check out ordering from the place that I turned to last time this happened about 3 years ago. Figured out my account info so that I could 'Login' to find out that there would be a 4 - 6 week delay for any orders to be shipped. Evidently a couple employees are out finishing up their chemo treatments.
Now what?
Try Alternate Two Supplier. Again another 'Login' hassle, but they had the parts and I got set to fill out my order. Then it came to the shipping info and the only choices the site gave were UPS 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day. Okay, I'm not paying to have 3-day shipping from California to Massachusetts. That would cost about half the value of the items shipped!
I quit. After over an hour I had gotten nothing accomplished.
I decided to try calling Alternate Two in the morning. Or...more like after noon because of the time difference.
A bit of reading and off to bed. Woke up this morning with one thing on my mind.
I had ruined tonight's dinner. Double drat. I had left a roast out to thaw yesterday meaning to put it in the fridge late in the day, or in the evening. So umpteen hours later, it was very thawed on the counter. Dumped that in the garbage.
Headed to the workshop, with my morning coffee, to unpack those keys that had arrived yesterday. It is a key top and a bushing job. For those of you unfamiliar with the work...for keytops I need only the naturals (white keys), for bushings I need the naturals and the sharps (black keys). 52 naturals and 36 sharps. Problem...of course! The tech shipped all 52 naturals but only 1 sharp. I've sent him an email...I haven't heard back...yet...how can he not notice 35 sharps sitting there all by themselves...lonesome without their other keys...
Amid phone calls and shipping a set of keys, a stop at the bank and a trip to the supermarket (I bought another roast), I finally called the supplier in California and will be getting my 10 sets of el-cheapo keytops. And they will be sent UPS Ground. Fingers crossed.
While I was at the supermarket I bought myself flowers. They are my good karma bouquet. Hope they work.

So Facebook Isn't Your Thing
That's okay, I understand. I tend to do more quick posting with Facebook and many of my photos end up over there. Over there...as if it is truly a place. Anyway, I thought some of you might like to see what has caused me physical agony over the past few days.
We had a blizzard last Tuesday. Approximately 30 inches of snow, wind gusts to 65 mph. I've been shoveling and shoveling and digging and digging. We had another couple inches last night and on Monday we are supposed to get another load of the white stuff. Probably somewhere over another foot of it.
Read my lips....t.i.m.e.t.o.m.o.v.e.s.o.u.t.h. We used to talk about putting a space heater on the bow of our boat and heading south, not stopping until someone asked, "What's that thing on the bow?" Well, we did eventually move to Florida and.....
I loved it
Someday.....In the meanwhile here are some photos of the snowy northeast.
And now..may Monday's forecast change to sunshine and warm temps!

The back fence and the back of my truck got rather drifted in. |
Pretty curl of snow off the truck and fence. Should be little snow surfers! |
Back drive almost dug out. |
The snow pile from plowing (near the end of our back drive). |
Back garden path shoveled to the deck and bulkhead (workshop) and most importantly to the oil fill. |
Fun with sun? I found the bulkhead under a four foot drift. |

Some people in town had more energy left than me and built a snow shark. |

So Many Questions! (Bernard)
Pretty much the size of a standard wooden matchstick with no actual flame stuff on the end. Many of them have been glued together end to end.
As you can see, it has joined the collection. The photo shows part of the collection.
They get dusted quarterly.

Oh, the Suffering
I thought this would be a fun project.
What was I thinking?
Still lots more to go...46 pages of patterns. And some say delightful things like make 7X or 4X or...
I am making progress, though. I'm working on the double pedestal.

Food Frenzy
Well...
We have three supermarkets on the island. The employees walked off the job at one of them.* That one being the lower priced product store. Kinda. Evidently, their most beloved leader, Artie T. was fired by his board (including his cousin Artie S.) A family feud that has been going on for decades finally exploded. First the warehouse drivers left work, then some managers were fired, then the employees started picketing. Then the customers decided to boycott in support of said Artie T. (and the fact that there were very few items left on the shelves.) "Bring back Artie T.!" or else.
In the meanwhile, all those Artie T. loving customers had to shop somewhere. Of course they went to the other two stores on the island...who were not equipped to handle the sudden overload of shoppers.
So, the other two stores have had to scramble to accommodate. I can't speak too much about one of them, but A works at the other. The median priced place.
The schedule manager quickly asked if employees could work extra hours. Then the request went out for employees to give up a day off in the upcoming week. Work 7 days straight. A agreed, as did most, she is scheduled to work 50.5 hours this week. The place is a zoo. Workers from out of the area affected by the Artie T. walkout are commuting to the store to help out. The store has even had to rent extra shopping carriages!
And while workers deal with all the mess and the massive extra effort is made to accommodate the folks from the Artie T. store, it would be nice to hear some appreciation from those customers.
What are the clerks hearing? "I hate shopping here." Your prices are too high." "It was better at Artie T's."
Go away, I say. Find something better. Hah.
*Rumor has it that many of those 'walk off the job' employees are actually punching the time clock for work and then going outside to picket the store that is paying them for those hours.
An update to the asterisk ...The Boston Globe newspaper reported that managers of several Artie stores have been scheduling employees for full schedules even though there is basically no one shopping at the stores. They are doing this to further damage the company financially. In my opinion this is theft. The managers and any employees knowingly participating in this should be fired, or prosecuted, for stealing this money from the company.

Arbitrary
Been a while since I've posted. Not that many have noticed!
Anyway, I'm still alive.
Some stuff:
It's has been too darn cold and snowy and that has been taking a lot of my extra energy. However, it's warm today at 40°. Unfortunately, I'm working in the shop, then going to a meeting at the Sandy Bay Historical. Back to 20°s next week.
My mom switched her auto insurance. She went to her agent with the required deposit check and the agent filed all the paperwork. The company wanted it filed online and then mailed to them, as well. Well, they goofed and issued two policies using her check and creating an electronic transfer check for funds from her checking account, realized their mistake, cancelled the extra policy AND THEN instead of refunding that extra $500 they took from her checking account, they just applied it, without her permission, to the first policy. So, they got a double deposit. She needs the $500 back and we sent them copies of her cancelled check and the cancelled "check" that they created. They say they won't refund the money unless she proves that both amounts were taken from her account. This she had to do by getting a letter from the bank. Idiots. The required info has been sent and if a check doesn't arrive soon, we'll head to the police station to file a complaint. We'll also file a complaint with the state insurance commission.
I've got better uses for my time. Why can no one do their job correctly?
It has been over four months since my lawyer has submitted all the paperwork to Probate to close out the estate of my aunt. Four months and nothing has been done in Probate. The papers sit there. All that is required is a signature to release the funds. Everything is done except for one signature. Four months...unbelievable.
Other stuff? Work, work, work. Lots of keys in the shop. Even a set all the way from Hawaii! 'R' has the large reservoir from the church organ in the shop, too. He works on that - I work on keys.
We've been to a couple auctions and indoor yard sales. I found six Statue of Liberties to buy at one of the yard sales. At another antiques show and sale I found a liberty bond poster with the statue's arm and torch as a large part of the illustration. The dealer wanted $400. Didn't buy it. At another table there was a very large bronze medallion commemorating the statue. They wanted $125 for that. Didn't buy it.
What I have bought is a laptop computer. Not using it yet as it is at my computer guy getting set up. Hopefully being portable will be money well spent. This desktop on which I'm typing still works fine and will be my main computer until it dies. Everyone seems amazed that it is still working more than fine after 10 years. I treat my stuff good!
Stop & Shop supermarket has a 'new' low prices promotion. They decided to hang banners from the light poles and along the main entrance for the grand celebration - the day before our last blizzard. Half the banners got destroyed in less than 24 hours. Didn't anyone think that outdoor displays would not be a good idea...in the middle of winter...the day before a blizzard with predicted winds gust over 50 mph? More idiots. What a waste of time and money.
We planted pepper seeds a couple weekends ago. Last year they came in too late and we only got a few green peppers. This year we've started earlier. They're sitting in a nice sunny (when the sun is out) window. Fingers crossed, nothing poking through the soil yet.
Nascar season has started. Hooray! Forced time off while we sit and watch the races. The Daytona 500 is this weekend. Wish I were there...the race...the warmth of Florida.
Well, that's a bit of my news. Must head off to that meeting......

May Be Worth Noting
Deb dressed up...
Well, not fancy or anything, but more than the norm of jeans and jeanish things. Two and a half weeks ago I had to temporarily assume the role of president of our local historical society when the reigning pres was hospitalized. I'm the vp. Of course, much to my dismay, this was just two and a half weeks before the annual meeting and 'chowdah supper'. The informative email that I received from the pres's wife was that nothing had been taken care of. Oh _____. So, while juggling a massive amount of key work (which seems never ending at this point still), tunings, SC estate stuff (though now minor), and of course canning(!), I endeavored to get it all together for the meeting...which I had to lead. Which I can force myself to do, but I hate public speaking. And to my surprise the recuperating pres. showed up and ate. Well...it's done with.
And...
I am so glad to back to jeans and a t-shirt today!

Lunacy
The 'Snow Moon' last night |
My goodness! The email/web/Internet in my world is nuts right now. I can't wait for some of it to sort out.
Well, I guess that I CAN wait...and I will.
It's like this: I have a primary email account. Currently that account handles personal emails, historic society emails, and two separate piano technician related groups. There is a big shift happening with the piano groups. The main group is being dissolved, yet the members don't want that to happen. A replacement format has been instituted (group 2) that the vast majority of the main group don't like. The talk is to abandon ship. Sooooooo, that brings us to the web based piano groups. I already belong to a group that discusses piano stuff. It's open to anyone, so it is not very technician based. Now I've subscribed to two alternate piano tech groups that are determined to replace the main group. These are the folks from the main group who have abandoned the 'official' new format. Both these two new groups are Google based and I receive them through Gmail. I could change one of them over to my primary email if I choose, but the other is a Google+ format that sticks with Gmail.
So, that's two email address...each handling two piano groups, plus other stuff.
Still with me?
Good, because there's more!
There are my two Yahoo email accounts. The one tied to this blog that also gets a lot of advertising because of using it when signing up for things like BFF Friendly's or Staples. It also handles my Facebook notifications. The second Yahoo account is my business email. Somehow the business email also ended up as the spot where I receive two other Yahoo group news digests.
Of course I also have an email through my website. Thankfully that forwards through to my primary email account.
How many is that? Ummm (counting off on fingers)...5.
And the non-email places where I write, kind of at my leisure...here at my blog, my personal Facebook page, my business Facebook page, and my website.
I'm tired.

Blizzard - The Day After
Since we have dug out, since being on the roads is allowed once again, since, well, since sometimes you just have to go out and have a look...
Sweats? No sweat at 18° |
Frosted starfish |
The Tavern (the Pewter Shop) |
Plastered with ice. Buildings along North Road sustained damaged on their water sides. |
At the corner of North Road...debris at bottom are rocks...and shingles from a neighboring building |
Just a little digging to do! |

Second Post - Starting the Worst
Looking across the front yard |
Mr. Cat in hibernation |
This last time, with horizontal snow at somewhere above 35 mph, I did around the cars and just my porch and the front walk. That's it for tonight. I expect to wake up to something between one and two feet and drifts. My back drive will take days to clear, it is totally drifted in.

Homer's Mom Wrote Another Book...
and I want a copy!
This book would have been on my Christmas list...but it won't be in stores until January. So...I'm hoping to win an autographed copy that WOULD arrive before Christmas. You'll be seeing more of Gwen Cooper's book as I try to increase my odds of winning. (Some of you may remember her other book, Homer's Odyssey, when it spent some time in my recent reads section of the sidebar.)

So What Is Doing?
Sometimes I think...."Waaayyyyy too much." I can't seem to stop the doings, though. They just keep coming!
First, back to my last post. They still haven't paid for the tuning. I'll be sending a second notice to them as soon as I buy stamps.
Oh yeah...I've got to go to the post office for stamps, including enough for sending Christmas cards (some need airmail Europe) but that won't happen until probably Tuesday. Monday I've got to drive my mom to and from day surgery. A shot for pain in her back. It's nothing serious, they just won't let you drive yourself. It's an hour drive each way and she will be there for a few hours...
Monday is shot (hahahaha).
Okay, so back to what HAS been going on...
R and I have started our SundaythereisnohuntingonSundays walks in the woods. They haven't been too exciting. No great discoveries - rocks and trees. Just different rocks and trees from previous walks. We need a change!
Nothing is happening with the Haskins Park project. I can't get anyone in charge at the town level to even correspond with me about the project. I'm now waiting until after the first of the year to re-approach them with the topic. Hopefully it will still be on their list and they'll be more willing to discuss it as a new year project.
Work has been steady. More tunings and repairs as the holidays approach and keys still continue to arrive.
Out of the blue I received a call from the SC neighbors to my cousin's property. I think that I mentioned here, long ago, that there was a big mess over the handling of his estate and the care of my aunt. Well, evidently things have not been satisfactorily handled at that end (no surprise) and now I feel obligated to involve myself as much as I am able. So, many phone calls and much online research later, I am trying to locate long lost relatives. It's not easy, folks! And even if I find these relatives, it is guaranteed to be a bumpy road to clear everything up at the SC end of things. I'll do my best to resolve it...but no promises!
We have something new on the horizon. An extremely large wind turbine is atop Railcut Hill. While I'm not convinced of its successful supplementation of power for the business where it is located, I do kind of like the looks of it up there! There are to be two more nearby supposedly to be tied to Gloucester's grid.
Yesterday, R and I went to an indoor yard sale at a small auction house. Mostly, it was a pile of junk. However, I did make a great buy with a lot of art supplies for only $15! The lot included many unused tubes of artists oils and a handful of brand new paint brushes. There's a large collection of ink pens and nibs that I may use someday, too. Considering the current price at the store for these items...I got a super deal!
Work, walks, paperwork (I did get my business books up-to-date and balanced the check books), phone calls, Christmas cards written, some shopping, errands, and the Sandy Bay Historical Society meetings...I've been busy!

This is BIG. The white areas, seen below at the edge of the marsh, are houses. |

The stone mounds at Haskins Park |
Although there are a few glitches, the essence is written in the article.
It was short notice for me to meet up with the Times reporter and photographer. It got squished in, with only about an hour notice, between reed organ work in the morning and an afternoon tuning for a Dana Farber benefit concert.

Some Saturday Stuff
I've been trying to take most weekends off - no work allowed. Mostly. I have cheated and gotten moving earlier in the day to get some work done so that I have had the rest of the day free. Yesterday, late morning, R wanted to go back to the White Elephant 'reject' shop in Essex. We had been there the Saturday before and he thought he might have missed picking up a record. Yes, as in LP, vinyl, 33.3. The reject shop is the stuff that's too beat up or whatever for the White Elephant Antique Shop just down the road a mile.
I browsed with my camera.
The Saturday before, mentioned in the previous paragraph, was devoted to the Mega Cruise Car Show at Skip's. We drove up for lunch and to wait for the show gates to open to the cars at 2 p.m. And there were LOTS of cars. Hundreds. They were lining up all along Rte. 110 in Merrimac...beyond as far as the eye could see. We stood in the 90°+ heat and watched the majority file in two by two. Then we walked around out in the field where they were parked, stopping to shoot pictures of some favorites. Since I don't have much use for a bunch of photos of cars, I tend to go for the artsy approach or look for other interesting (to me) stuff.
Not that I have use for those shots, either.
Oh well.
