Storm Stories

Thought I'd add a couple of pictures for background info. These are pics of our 36 foot, 10.5 ton, ferro-cement sailboat. It is a ketch rig, Sampson Marine design, built by my father. (Yes, from scratch) It's documented name is "Minoan". After my family sold it in 1985, it was used as a day sail charter out of Rockport. At some point it was sold once more and became a "live aboard" in Boston Harbor. These photos show the "Minoan" when it dragged it's mooring during a northeaster in September 1977. It spent a week on the beach. Then with a great deal of effort, many pounds of Crisco, a front end loader, and the "Can Do", the "Minoan" was successfully towed off the beach and sustained no damage.

Thanks, Dave. What is your blog address? I'd love to be in touch about the boat. My dad passed away this July and the Minoan was mentioned in his obit. It was quite a unique way for me to grow up with a boat being constructed in the yard and all the people and publicity that found us!

Hey Deb,
I finally have all my minoan photos posted onto my computer. I can email you some photos if you would like. I just tried to post one as a comment here but it didn't work. You can reach me at eggislandconcepts@gmail.com

Hi Deb,
I was part of the team that got the Minoan off the beach and back to safe harbor that day.

Hi Paul, I remember that there were a couple people that I didn't really know that helped out. One was a taxi driver, the other was someone from Mass Art, maybe? Then, of course, there were those aboard the Can-Do with Capt. Quirk.

Also, now that the Minoan is in my mind, I think I'll be doing a follow-up post or two in the near future.

Deb,
I am the someone from Mass Art. Unfortunately those aboard the Can-Do might have gone down with their boat a short time after the rescue of the Minoan.
